Are you planning to conduct expert interviews or focus groups for your data collection? Or perhaps collect policy papers, press articles, or Internet data from blogs, Facebook or Twitter? If you do, you will soon or later have to face the pile of data you collected and analyse it. Will you know how? The aim of this course is to provide students with strategic understanding and applied skills in the analysis of qualitative data - that is, data coming in textual, visual, or artefact form. At the end of the course, students will be able to plan, conduct, and critically assess the quality of qualitative analysis in their own and other people’s research. Key topics covered include developing an analytic plan in line with one’s research design, coding data meaningfully and reliably, seeking patterns using retrieval techniques, and communicating findings effectively. Lectures, lab exercises using NVivo, and daily assignments constitute the basis of learning. Students conducting qualitative research as part of their PhD / postdoc will particularly benefit from the course. Prerequisite knowledge Basic knowledge of qualitative research is required. No requirement of qualitative analysis or NVivo.
